Daytime Tri-Cities
Margaret and I were so excited to join Amy Lynn on Daytime Tri-Cities to talk about the use of products in your kitchen to maximize the use of storage space.
DAYTIME TRI-CITIES
In this quick segment, we did a brief introduction on the process we use in client homes, including a start with decluttering before we make our final product selections. As we make those selections, we like to be very intentional by selecting products that make the best use of each space. Here is a recap and a bit more information on each theme from our interview.
DECLUTTERING
The most Important 1st step to any organizing project is decluttering. In the kitchen, so many gadgets can take up space, but may not be necessary for our everyday cooking needs. Therefore, we encourage:
Decluttering down to only the essentials, store that special holiday china on a high shelf or in another storage area and keep only the essentials in your kitchen, especially if you are short on space.
Multi-use appliances are your friend (air-fryer oven combo or crockpot/ Instapot/ Air fryer combinations just to name a few)
Less gadgets for specific fruit or veggie use-cases. Apart from a special tool to avoid avocado injuries, and a lemon squeezer, not much else was utilized in my home. However, I bypass strawberry tools, cherry pitting devices and so much more for YEARS before I finally decluttered.
UTILIZE PRODUCTS TO MAXIMIZE STORAGE
After our decluttering process, we utilize product to maximize remaining storage space.
Utilize organizing Products to Maximize Vertical Height
Use products like bakeware organizers in cabinets, beside appliances, etc, to place cutting boards and bake wear upright for ease of access. Like Kylie’s cutting board organizer featured in the interview. You can utilize similar products for Tupperware lids, bakeware, and so much more!
Drawer Organization: A good rule of thumb is if you’re looking downward, a drawer is the answer.
Utilize long-bins as makeshift drawers.
These are a cost-effective way to Also so many options to add sliding units to cabinets for a reasonable price point.
Spinners are the ultimate all-star when it comes to kitchen and pantry organization. Here is how to utilize them properly.
Maximizing visibility & accessibility of high shelves.
We like to use them anywhere we are looking straight onward or up at something (vs downward)
They you to move 1 item vs shuffling a stack of items.
Use “low-wall” spinners on higher shelves, but high-wall spinners can be utilized on higher shelves.
TO DECANT, OR… NOT TO DECANT
Decanting spices is not for everyone, but there are so many reasons I love it.
It allows for an at-a glance inventory: the clear sides make it easy to see when you’re almost out of stock.
On the show, I talked about my usage of spice jars, and the important step of adding expiration labels.
You just can’t beat the aesthetics vs different styles and sizing of spice packaging you often encounter as you buy spices from various stores.
CLEAR BINS vs ENCLOSED OPTIONS
Use Clear bins for easy inventory and more accessible items (like approved snacks) vs things you’d like to hide away like treats, especially Mom’s chocolate stash.
The Home Edit Walmart Collection is a favorite for its availability and accessibility (Walmart locations).
